Alvar Aalto - Artek 402 "Carro Armato", zebrata - Lænestol - 1
The armchair 402, created by Alvar Aalto and better known as Tank, is one of the milestones of 20th century furniture design. Alvar Aalto created the Tank in 1936 for the Milan Triennale.
This item was exhibited at the opening of the 2008 season in Spazio Mazzotta, Milan.
This solid armchair attracted a lot of attention and was also awarded during the fair. The Tank chair was different from Alvar Aalto's previous items of furniture, because of both its appearance and its premises.
Previously, Aalto designed his furniture for a specific building, while the Tank was designed as commission work for the Triennale. The sturdy seat and the wide armrests, as well as making the armchair extremely comfortable, are elements that give the armchair is characteristic appearance - which is indeed reminiscent of a tank. The lightness seen in Alvar Aalto's first chairs gave way to a more solid appearance and the centre of gravity was lowered.
The Tank with zebra print upholstery is one of the most popular, but this is just one option, as the armchair can be reupholstered with many types of material. Among these are Fanny Aronsen materials, that bring new tones to this timeless classic.
The armchair is in good condition; there are some signs of wear on the wood, but it is very sturdy. Seat in excellent condition.
