Congolese artist and painter, François Mafoua was born in Dolisie on June 4th, 1950 and has been living in Paris for more than thirty years. Recognized and renowned, François Mafoua is an artist devoid of any artistic border. There are no limits to his universe: he can paint, sculpts, tells stories, sings and plays the likembe. His pictorial world is also placed under the seal of the diversity: the formats are as varied, so are the media he uses. From a sudden inspiration, it can create artworks measuring 2 x 50 metres, adorned with two massive wooden doors. In another momentum of his, he would perform a small size painting on an animal skin. Sometimes, in the middle of a canvas, a piece of cassava, a gunny or a fish skin can be found. Mafoua is a sensitive artist who wants to discover the smells, heat and vibration of his native Congo and Africa. In terms of technique, François Mafoua likes to surprise and to vary the pleasures. On the same series of paintings, he may alternate easily between slender silhouettes and landscapes with a suggested stroke, giving the feeling to emerge from the morning mist.
