THE GREATEST SATIRICAL POEM IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS THE GREATEST MOCK-CRITICAL APPARATUS EVER ACHIEVED

THE FIRST EDITION OF ‘THE DUNCIAD VARIORUM’ – THE GREATEST SATIRICAL POEM IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE, WITH NUMEROUS LEARNED 18TH CENTURY EXPLANATORY AND EDITORIAL ANNOTATIONS AND CORRECTIONS, OF THE 1729 FIRST EDITION OF THE ‘DUNCIAD VARIORUM’ OF ALEXANDER POPE, THE GREATEST SATIRICAL POEM IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS UNDOUBTEDLY THE GREATEST MOCK-CRITICAL APPARATUS EVER ACHIEVED, PRINTED IN QUARTO AT LONDON FOR ‘A. DOD,’ WITH THE FAMOUS ENGRAVED VIGNETTE ON THE TITLE-PAGE SHOWING AN ASS LADEN WITH BOOKS, CHEWING THISTLES, AND AN OWL PERCEHD ATOP, COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND BOUND IN 20TH CENTURY QUARTER-CALF. The volume may be referenced as Griffith 211 and Foxon P771. This is the true first issue, ending in X4 and without the ‘Addenda. M. Scriblerus Lectori’ leaf at the end’ (which was added in the later ‘John Wright for A. Dod’ issue)

THE REMARKABLE 18TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATIONS ARE DETAILED IN FULL BELOW.

The full title reads as follows:

“The Dunciad Variorum. / With the Prolegomena of Scriblerus. / London. / Printed for A. Dod. 1729.”

THE DUNCIAD, THE GREATEST POETICAL SATIRE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, is Pope’s mock-encomium to Dulness, in which he skewers his political and literary enemies, as well as the general epidemic of pretension and vacuity. The poem is an indisputable masterpiece; however, the same can be said of the mock-critical apparatus, in which Pope provides needlessly obscure notes and baroque criticisms in great volume.

It must also be noted that three major iterations of ‘The Dunciad’ were produced over the course of Pope’s career. The first was the octavo and duodecimo of 1728, which contained only the poem, was in three books, and is extremely rare. In this iteration and the subsequent, Lewis Theobald was the ‘hero,’ as a reward for his exhaustive criticism of Pope’s edition of Shakespeare (see Theobald’s “Shakespeare Restored” of 1726). The second iteration was the quarto and octavo of 1729, called “The Dunciad Variorum,” which was openly avowed by Pope and contained the mock-critical apparatus of Scriblerus. THE PRESENT VOLUME IS THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS ITERATION. IT IS THEREFORE ALSO THE FIRST AUTHORIZED EDITION. The third iteration dates from 1742, adds a fourth book, replaces Theobald with Colley Cibber, and announces the fulfillment of the conquest of Darkness, which the first and second iterations had only prophesied.
