After Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) - “The Three Trees” - 1643 - Probably a late print (19th century)

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (1606-1669) Etching on laid paper, after Rembrandt, probably a reprint “state nr. ?” of an original plate from the 19th century given the size of the plate and the sheet that match the size of the original work. Title “The Three Trees” signed ans dated on the sheet’s bottom left “Rembrandt f. (barely visible without a magnifying lens) 1643” Dimension of the plate: 21.3 x 27.8 cm, sheet: 22.2 x 28.2 cm - Painted wooden frame: 32.5 x 42.5 cm, etching under glass. Quite good overall condition with traces of age and a few small freckles (see pictures) To understand the shots n°17, 18 and 19, they are taken from the back of the plate in transparency, one can perfectly observe the laid paper’s structure. Please note that this etching was professionally appraised simply through the pictures sent to a big auction house expert. A deeper expert assessment might be necessary. Please also note that, for safety matters, the etching will be separated from the glass frame and will be shipped apart from it. ............................................................................................................ The Three Trees Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606 - Amsterdam 1669) Date: 1643 The Three Trees are the largest and most impressive landscape engraved by Rembrandt. Here, the painter has masterly combined several techniques (dry point, engraving, engraved lines of various depths and speckled tones) in order to create a sense of nature and a stream. He has animated such a landscape with great details: an artist drawing on the hill on the right, a couple of fishermen on the bottom left and a couple of lovers hidden in the bushes of the dark foreground. Some of the clouds formationsare unnatural and left in the centre show that Rembrandt has engraved The Three Trees on a plate containing an abandoned sketch for The Death of the Virgin, a composition that he completed on a bigger plate in 1639.
