There is no date on the painting, so the exact period is unknown. The painting originates from the family collection. The painting has always been in the possession of the family and was bought directly from the painter.
David Schulman was born on 31 October 1881 in Hilversum. His father, Lion Schulman, was a painter himself and had an art dealership in Hilversum and later in Laren. Besides that, he also sold painting materials. Because of that, David came into contact at a young age with in those years renowned painters when he delivered their orders. Amongst others, to Albert Neuhuys who recognised David as a future artist by looking at his drawings. He advised Schulman sr. to let his son David paint. Schulman was an autodidact. He moved the store to Laren in 1898. Six years later in 1904, David exhibited his first painting at the exhibition held by the society ‘Arti et Amicitiae’ in Amsterdam.
